Training

I wanted to start a thread on training, because I think it's crucial. Way too many gun owners have never even fired their weapon, which is the primary circumstances under which owning a gun is more likely to hurt them than help them.

If you own a firearm, please practice with it! And if you can afford it, take a class!

Re: Training

Consider trying a FAT (Fire Arms Training) system.

Uses a video projection system. Some only allow you to use their 'laser' type pistol that records the hits on the screen for your review.

Others allow you to shoot whatever firearm you own.

I've used both. I like them both. Don't forget your verbal commands to the bad guys.

Like 'hands up'. Or 'down on the ground'. Or 'Stop or I WILL SHOOT' type of commands. It gives you a literal example of how you will react under stressful situations.

Lots of LEO departments use these. But a few are in private hands for private training.

In Canada, you cannot get a permit without completing a fire arms safety class. That and not having a criminal record, or being clinically insane are pretty much the only restrictions on owning some form of gun. So much for Canada's super duper gun control.

I found it handy to keep a Gamo "Glock" on hand to practice presentation with. Digging that bugger from where it hides (under stress) could present some problems. Pack it for a few hours w/ the right company...friendly participant issues random command, and Mr.Paper Plate gets it! MANY times!
