Pembroke Park man accused of illegally selling guns denied bond

A federal magistrate denied bond Tuesday to a Pembroke Park gun store owner accused of selling a convicted felon firearms that have been linked to a deadly shootout between rival drug groups in Guatemala .

Victor Needleman, 56, sold 40 Glock and FN semiautomatic pistols to the felon at Needleman's American Range and Gun Shop Inc., on the 3100 block of S.W. 19th Street, over several months, according to a federal complaint.

Needleman knew of the felon's criminal past and advised him that he could buy firearms if he had someone without a criminal record fill out the paperwork, said prosecutor Michael Walleisa.

U.S. Magistrate Lurana S. Snow denied bond, saying she was disturbed by evidence that Needleman not only sold the weapons to a felon but counseled him on evading the law.

Needleman's arraignment is set for April 24.

Defense attorney Fred Haddad said he would review the government's evidence and vigorously defend the case.

If convicted, Needleman faces a roughly six-year prison term.

The felon who allegedly purchased the guns from Needleman had been convicted of arson in 1995 in Illinois.

On Jan. 18, he was arrested trying to take 14 firearms on a flight to Guatemala, Walleisa said. Law enforcement records confirmed the guns had come from Needleman's store.

The felon told investigators he had purchased thousands of dollars worth of semi-automatic handguns from the Pembroke Park business, according to the complaint.

To cover up the sales, Needleman would backdate receipts, charge credit cards in other people's names for guns the felon had purchased, and allowed people without records to fill out the forms, the complaint stated.

Walleisa said guns registered to individuals involved in a shootout last month in Guatemala had been purchased at Needleman's shop.

Needleman, who lives in Sunny Isles Beach, faces charges of knowingly and unlawfully selling firearms to a convicted felon, aiding and abetting straw purchases of firearms, knowingly making false statement in records required to be maintained by a licensed dealer, and making false entries in records of licensed firearms dealers.

He's got Haddad for an attorney, He'll win. In Florida If you have the $$$$$$$$$ to buy Haddad you'll usually win.
At least thats the way it was when I lived in Florida.

Defense attorneys look for who can pay.

Good luck beating the charges on this one. Strawman sales should bring out all the RICO and asset forfeiture penalties possible. The dealer coached the felon in how to subvert the law. Guess he was too dumb to stay in business.

Any firearms dealer who assists a felon in acquiring weapons is no better than a drug dealer. Maybe Big-Rob will get to bid on the gunrange at an auction in the near future?

This FFL holder is responsible for every one of those weapons he delivered. He deserves to serve time.

Yeah, he should be executed via electrocution..
Then revived with a defribulator..
Then executed again via firing squad..
Then his body burnt at the stake until crispy and hung in the public square demonstrating to the masses what happens when one commits the worst crime mankind has ever known...

Dang Dippy move on the owners part.

Private sales are one thing but, Getting into this type of trouble calls for the best Criminal Defense Attorney money can buy. I hope Mountain Man is right about the caliber of his Legal team.

I hate to see Gun Guys get into trouble.

This guy does need to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. One of the best arguments against further tightening gun laws is that there are already laws on the books, and these should be enforced. If this guy is guilty and he gets off, the anti-gunners will be all over it like white on rice. When idiots flout the law for profit, it will only make those of us who abide by the law more suspect, and it risks all of our rights.

FINALLY, one TINY bit of common sense.

You are a convicted FELON who just got caught attempting to smuggle 14 handguns. WHY NOT BLAME THE SELLER?

Now IF he did all the things the Feds are saying he did, he does deserve jail time. Which he may or may not get.

But again, let's see how the 'cookie crumbles' as it were. TESTIMONY OF A FELON CAUGHT IN THE ACT, BLAMING SOMEONE ELSE RARELY WORKS OUT FOR THE PROSECUTION.

Yeah, the article has him tried and convicted already. I would be very skeptical that a range owner is that stupid for a measly 40 hand guns. What is the margin on that sale??? 100-200 dollars per each max? This smells.

Re: SH*T!!!!

What is with you guys?

Convicted felons are supposed to be able to traipse down to the gunshop and buy 40 high-cap pistols over a couple mos from one public dealer? WTF is wrong with this picture?

Amish, are you retarded?
This is not a "gun guy". This guy is providing armament to criminals. Maybe your sister gets murdered with one of these Glock pos in a car-jacking? Likely there was more money paid on the side to "look the other way".

Think this is funny? Murder happens all the damn time. WTF were these guns doing down in Guatemala? More tools of the death squads, or banditos?

The morons who think this is funny deserve a slap with a 1911 longslide as a wake up. You people give gunowners a bad name.
Florida. It figures.

The white-trash antique dealer opined that I was a fugitive because I moved to Alaska.
Well, given his la de da attitude toward the law, probably the reverse is true.

Lots of scum on this forum openly discuss and recommend ways to contravene firearms laws. Like the "renaissance gunsmith" who advises buying cases of rifles and ammunition to hold so you can sell them to (whoever). Like the guy from VA who wanted to know how to get around his state's 1 gun purchase every 30days law.

Idiots here just chime in and mouth off.

Yeah, you hope this gun-running scumbag goes free.
This guy is worse than a heroin dealer. At least junkies don't go around shooting-up innocent people at stoplights, or when they break into their homes. Junkie just kills themself. Bastard selling 40 pistols to a convicted felon who is known to him to be a convict, is delivering murder and mayhem that could affect any of us.

Most of you guys are just too damn dumb!

money matters 04-16-2008 12:43 PM

Re: SH*T!!!!

The seller logged in the guns by serial number,
The seller transacted with the buyer,
The buyer was caught with the guns seller had booked in,
Seller knew buyer,
Seller coached buyer how to do the deal,
If buyer did not obtain guns from seller, they would not be entered on his FFL registry book.
Strawman is not a cut-out or defense; this is what convicts seller and establishes motive to contravene the law.

Sure, maybe the BATF had this felon go to 40 different individual buyers and pay them 2x what their Glocks cost to build a case....

Sometimes there are simply greedy and dumb crooks out there.
Who knows? Maybe there are extenuating circumstances?
Seller should have contacted BATF if there were.

Unless you are buying Glockx for Team Zissou, or your whole family; who buys 40 in a couple mos other than a gun-running crook?

Somebody needs more fiber in their diet.

On a sliding scale of worst crimes to commit, with a child-molesting murder being a 10 and jaywalker being a 1... I'd put this guy (if guilty) at about a 2-3. Obviously you'd put him at an 11, just below the level of anti-christ.

Just because somebody disagrees with you on the severity of the crime doesn't warrant calling them white trash, retarded, morons, and scum.

I think you owe mtnman an apology, if you knew him, you'd know he's in actuality a very nice guy that rarely bad-mouths anyone.

You on the other hand I'm wondering about...

Re: SH*T!!!!

MM,
SO YOU KNOW the FELON THEY CAUGHT? YOU KNOW FOR A FACT THAT WHAT HE TOLD THE FEDS WAS TRUTH?

Sheesh, this is beyond belief.

It's not like the FEDS to make this up? OR MADE A DEAL with the FELON, telling him what to say so the FEDS could swoop down on a legitimate gun seller? Like that has NEVER HAPPENED before?

Please, lets not try this case WITHOUT THE ACTUAL FACTS BEING KNOWN, EH?

You are once again, proving how little you know about the gun industry, the BATFE, the NEWS MEDIA and criminals...

Please, PLEASE, PLEASE cease and desist until this case has been tried before a jury.

And just so the FACTS as stated by the NEWSPAPER are stated TRUTHFULLY HERE, this occured over a period of SEVERAL MONTHS. When I was buying and selling firearms, I could have EASILY bought and sold forty hand guns over a 'several month' period. And EVERY PERSON who would have purchased from me would have had a background check or the sale would not have been completed. If it's a 'straw' buyer, that's tough for someone to pick up on. ESPECIALLY if the BG used several different 'cut outs' to purchase them. IF that's the case, the gun seller did NOTHING WRONG. But again, lets wait and SEE what actually happened rather than jump on ONE article in ONE newspaper. Which may OR MAY NOT be reporting the truth.

If this gun shop owner DID something ILLEGAL, he will pay for it. Hell, there are a LOT of gun shop owners who did NOTHING ILLEGAL and they STILL PAID FOR IT. So how about we wait to see what the trial brings?

OK?

Money Matters ...Are you for real?

I've got three problems with this whole thing.

first off ... He tried to take a stack of guns out of the country by plane. With the raging lunacy of today's airport security? Not likely.
Second ... why would drug dealers in Guatemala pay retail prices for semi auto. You can get full auto for half that on the black market.
Third ... where did this guy find 14 friends without criminal records to register as gun owners on his behalf?

I'm as quick as any to try someone in the media, but those are some pretty big holes for that story to try and hold any water with.

@Money Matters

First off, all those personal attacks are totally uncalled for.

Secondly, unless you are privy to the actual information about the case, you are talking out of your ass.

Remember, Innocent until proven guilty. The feds are going by what a convicted felon who is trying to save his own ass told them.

+1 something stinks to high heaven.......

A gun dealer is not going to risk his license for 40 glocks..... there is not enough money there. and the minute you have a perp that has "found religion" I get really leery.....

The perp was looking at life without parole he has every reason under the sun to spread this stink around as much as possible.

As I was saying ... This sounds like a Headline Special. There's too many holes for this to be the actual story ... Factual or accused. The cops wouldn't issue a press release with that many obvious gaps.

Hes been in business since I was a little kid. Ive gone to his range for at least 20 years. Thats why I find this to be really really hard to believe.

Someone thats been in the firearms business as long as he has just doesn't decide to jeopardize their FFL by helping out a felon by telling him how to do straw purchases for a few thousand dollars worth or pistols.

I dont buy it.

See, this is what I'm talking about. There is NO WAY some guy who KNOWS the BATFE will be ALL OVER HIM would knowingly sell anyone a firearm if they were either a felon OR doing a straw purchase FOR a felon.

He would lose his way of livelihood. Plus lose everything else to fines and attorney's fees. So this article made absolutely NO SENSE.

Now, a felon (possibly a third strike felon) who KNEW he was caught and going to jail for a long time MIGHT be persuaded to roll over on this guy. That does NOT make the gun store/firing range owner guilty. Set up, maybe. But guilty. NOT A CHANCE.

PS, Tn - Andy - we still on for that one ounce of silver RP bet? And you think you got it bad being a mod here. Try volunteering as head mod for a site. It IS a full time job. Even WITH help. Keep up the great work.

Seee what I mean

THIS HAS GOT TO BE A SHAKEDOWN!!!....

His lawyer will eat BATFE alive...and I bet you they will issue a retraction on page 89 section z in the local paper " gun owner vindcated"

But that wont stop him from being on the red list for the rest of his life.... the next time the state/Fed inspectors come around .... they will give him greif the likes of which have never been seen for the remainder of his years.

THIS SUCKS BIG TYME..... LAW ABIDING PEOPLE LOOSE WHEN STUFF LIKE THIS HAPPENS IT MAKES ME SICK TO MY DAM STOMACH.

They did that last Thursday. Me and my wife went there to shoot her new pistol and there was a big sign on the door that said "Closed for Inventory". I wondered why they were closed during peak times and now I know.

The BATFE was going thru his records.

This one stinks as many of you have said already. One more question. What is the importance of the Guatemala connection? This looks like a new tactic to me. They even aired a big special on the news about it. It seems odd to me that we would be looking for the seller of firearms that somehow ended up used in a Guatemala homicide. Perhaps this internation conncection is what gives the extra authority to confiscate records? This is odd to me.
