Primers
What component is ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE to manufacture as an individual???????????
Primers! Anyone try to buy any lately???? Prices through the roof when you can find them. Six month life on new primers???? My gun dealer told me that is part of the NEW AGENDA! Control the ammunition and the components--They don't need to control the guns if there is nothing to put in them. CC |

Not bad for these parts & I actually see it online for more. Then again I pay 30 bucks a pound for powder:rant: Wonder how anyone could put a shelf life of 6 months on primers? |
Re: Primers
Primers are an interesting subject.
Were not corrosive primers (military surplus) formulated to 'last a long time', in other words, for their longevity, as it was the weakest (most time sensitive) component of the 'bullet'. Any takers? |
Re: Primers
The gunshow in Tucson was sold out of Small Rifle primers 1 hour after it opened. My local dealer only had 1 box on the shelf. $32 a thousand

But no one around here-upstate NY-has any. MidwayUSA has no small rifle and limited others. I haven't been able to get anyone at the four stores I deal with in Nevada to sell any to me-small rifle-They all say they are out. I may be wrong and am open to criticism. CC |
Re: Primers
Just picked up a bunch from Powder Vallety. Couldn't get the CCI 300 for my AR though. Will let you know in 6 mo's if they still work. I am sure they will...

Re: Primers
If someone managed to create usable primers that last only 6 months, that would be some interesting chemistry. The usual main component, lead styphnate, lasts more or less indefinitely. On the other hand, lead-free primers using aluminum styphnate have a life of perhaps 10 years, and this could be shortened by adding oxidation agents or other catalysts. But did someone really go through all that trouble to make a product inferior?

Re: Primers
I stopped in another gunshop today and cheapest SR primers he had were...$42 !!!! Powder had gone up to $30. In a pinch can small pistol primers be used in 223 ?

Re: Primers
Plenty of primers up in the Phoenix area, they were pretty scarce for a while, but started being restocked just after christmas.
Powder now... I Havn't seen an 8 lb jug of IMR 4895 in months. |
Re: Primers
I have disassembled used primers, knocked the dimple out with a small punch, packed the cavity with the very tip material from strike anywhere kitchen matches, and then carefully pressed the little three pronged anvil back into th e primer cup, and reloaded 38 special cartridges with a normal load of bullseye propellant. they all fired normally. I do not know how long they would last, and I rather doubt they would stand up to a high moisture environment, but they went 100% for my sample.

Re: Primers
For anyone loading for 5.56 (223), try some Russian Wolf small rifle magnum. A bunch of the guys shooting across the course at 600 yards swear by them. I got 5,000 for $85.

Re: Primers
Grafs and sons~ primers for Pistols are about $3.10 per 100. A little better per 5000 or thousand.
Powder is typically $23 per lb. Better in 5lbs--but thats a lot for me. I know they have plenty. E-A |
Re: Primers
I just picked up another 3000 today at $25 per thousand.
I feel lucky to have got them. Now I need to get more powder.....Man I hope this place never catches fire:wink: |
