Battleships

Anyone spent time exploring the WWII era warships still maintained a floating museums? If you like guns, a battleship is the place to be. Below are some views of USS Alabama, anchored in Mobile Bay.

The last shot is the USS North Carolina. Look at the size of the 16 inch guns! They would shoot 2000 + lb shells propelled by 450 lbs of gunpowder over 30 miles. The side view of the Alabama shows five dual 5 inch gun turrets just on one side of the boat for 20 total and that's the secondary armament.

The bow view shows aircraft defense 20mm Oerlikons.

Nice, I hear that the concussion of the main guns could kill a man if they were standing too close.

I've been there a long time ago. Do they still have the sub next to it?

I worked on some designs for a memorial for the New Jersey, but the project went to the Delaware River group of vets. It is now open as a museum also.

Next to Alabama? Yes. If you want a lesson in claustrophobia, tour a WWII sub. They fed 80 people out of a galley the size of my bathroom. The Captains Quarters were smaller than my closet. Took a special breed for that.

Below a shot of the torpedo room of the USS Drum, by far the largest open space on the boat. I tried hard to get some good shots of the interior but it's impossible. No matter where you are in the sub, the sight distance is no more that 10 feet, often less but 15 max and with concentrated machinery all around.
