Oatmeal???
Does anyone out there make oatmeal a priority prep? I have found that oatmeal is almost useless in providing lasting energy, I'm hungry about half an hour after I eat it. It's almost as if I'm less hungry if I skip breakfast altogether!
I eat buckwheat, and this lasts me well into the afternoon. Is oatmeal a farce, or is it just me? Don't want to waste my money and storage space on it if so. |
Re: Oatmeal???
I eat it every morning. I soak it overnight to remove the phytates that are "anti-nutrients." It holds me well but i have it mixed with olive oil (and berries).

Re: Oatmeal???
i've always hated oatmeal and porridge
but last year my sister gave me a box of oatmeal with the little packets, now i eat them everyday i have oatmeal packets in all my caches because of the small individual pouches half a can of tuna, mix in a packet of oatmeal, add a little water and heat mmmmmmmmmmmmmm never tried buckwheat http://www.survivalistssite.com/~can...bob/bob_16.jpg |
Re: Oatmeal???
There is a huge thread about this laying around somewhere.
In a nutshell: HECK YES! But you should be storing bulk rolled oats and whole oats. The prepackaged stuff contains milk products that severely limits the shelf life. Oats is VERY versatile, from an additive to meats, to baking..etc. It also requires very little cook time, and stores almost forever if sealed in #10 cans with oxy absorber. Plus it is a much needed variety item. Nothing will be better received after weeks of beans and rice than a batch of oatmeal cookies with some dried fruit baked in. |
Re: Oatmeal???
I've read that steel cut oats retain more nutrition as they are less processed
I like oats with cayenne pepper |
Re: Oatmeal???
Oatmeal is near the top of my preps list. Low cost, easy to cook, great nutiitional value, fiber, and IMHO delicious "straight up." :emotions16:

Re: Oatmeal???
I have to figure out a better way to prepare it, I'm not getting any good burn time. Maybe it needs to supplement other stuff.

Re: Oatmeal???
If you grind it fine enough I bet I could snort it through a straw.

Re: Oatmeal???
Horses do pretty well on oats.
What's good about oatmeal is that it has a lot of oil. That slows digestion so you don't feel hungry again too soon. Another good thing is that it's cheap. I get Quaker Oats 9 lb box for 50 cents a pound at Smart & Final. I seldom eat it straight because it's kinda tasteless, but it's great for cookies and pancakes. I always have a few of these lying around: Oatmeal Applesauce Cookies Yield: about 2 dozen 1 1/3 c sugar 1 t cinnamon 1/2 t baking soda 1/2 t salt 2/3 c butter, softened 2 eggs 1 c applesauce 2 TB vanilla 2 1/2 c flour 2 1/2 c oatmeal 1 c chopped walnuts 1 c dried cranberries Oven to 375 F. Mix all. Measure 1/4 cup per cookie, 1/3 cup if you want big ones. Mash it out because it won't spread as it bakes. Bake 20 minutes or until lightly browned. They will be soft. I use a lot of vanilla because I like it. You don't have to use that much. Oatmeal Pancakes Makes one serving 1 cup quick oatmeal, whizzed in a blender 1 TBSP sugar 1 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1/2 tsp ginger 1 egg, beaten 1 TBSP powdered milk* 1 cup water* *Or liquid milk, or buttermilk, or water alone if you prefer Warm a frying pan over medium heat. Mix the dry ingredients, then add the liquids. Add more water until the mix is pourable. Stir well. Divide into three or four equal parts. Put non stick spray in the pan and pour the batter in a circular motion. NOTE: When cooking regular pancakes you watch the bubbles form, break, and fill in. When you notice some bubbles don't fill in after breaking, it's time to turn. But with this recipe you wait until nearly ALL the bubbles have broken and not filled in. |
Re: Oatmeal???
I have oatmeal... GAAAAWD do I have oatmeal.
If I don't end up eating it I figure I could build a shelter out of it if need be. @ Saul Mine: good recipes... I think I'll have some for breakfast! |

Re: Oatmeal???

Re: Oatmeal???
I like taking the 7 grain cereal I buy and adding rolled oats, oat bran, and quinoa to it. When I fix it I use 1/4 cup cereal, 3/4 cup water, a bit of salt, some sugar, and some dried fruit. Microwave and add a bit of syrup to the top when served.
Another way I use oats is making granola. It disappears quick. |
Re: Oatmeal???
Anybody have a link for the High Quality oats???
May grab some to keep in the stash. T |
Re: Oatmeal???
Yep, have 100#'s my self in long term storage. Rolled oats. Have a few (round)boxes from Quaker that is our now and imediate in the future use.

Re: Oatmeal???
Blech! Can't stand the stuff! I do have four cans in case I have to make oatmeal cookies (an acceptable use for oatmeal) or maybe a pinata (picture a ~ on that n....remember making pinatas with newspaper and oatmeal glue as a kid?). I did have six #10 cans, bought as a case from the LDS at a good price sometime back, but I gave two cans to a friend who wanted to start storing food but didn't have a lot of money.

I've got 6 of the honeyville #10 cans (well actually 5 and a half :-P). I prefer steel cut oats to rolled or instant oats. The steel cut don't seem to make as much of a paste when you cook them. We make porridge quite often with them (the steel cut...rolled oats turn to glue). We put 1 cup steel cut oats, 4 cups water, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a small crock pot just before bed. Turn it on low around 10-11pm, wake up at 6:30-7am to steaming hot breakfast. I usually then scoop out half for me and half for my wife. I like to add raisins and honey in the morning, she goes for honey and dried strawberries or raspberries (the freeze dried ones from honeyville work well for this!) I like steel cut oats the best, and I like the honeyville oats. I sometimes eat a spoon full right out of the can... |

Re: Oatmeal???
That's the beauty of a crockpot; it does the cooking for you. You just have to put the ingredients in, turn it on, & walk away.

Re: Oatmeal???
I like oatmeal. I eat it raw, with milk and honey. Good with raisins and brown sugar too. I like it better raw than cooked.

Re: Oatmeal???
Are the Honeyville cans ideal for deep storage????
Or should additional measure be taken when stocking them away? I am wondering because regular Quaker oats comes in a paper container and bad infestation of mice can make very quick work of it . T |
Re: Oatmeal???
I can't say for sure the shelf life, but they are in #10 cans (like Ima said) and they also have oxy absorbers in the can as well as being sealed.
They seem to be pretty decently sealed for deep storage. No mouse is going to chew through the metal can...Does anyone know about #10 cans and BPA? There is a thread going about soup/veggie cans containing it...does our long term storage #10 cans contain it as well? (I'm sure it doesn't leech as well in dry foods...but still) I too "feel hungry" after I eat breakfast but I attribute that to the oatmeal "jumpstarting" my metabolism in the morning and therefore I feel hungry before lunch. If I don't eat breakfast I can go all the way till lunch before I start to feel hungry. I have found that it is easier to lose weight when I eat oatmeal in the morning, even though I'm taking in extra calories. I have no scientific proof, only my own observations, but when I have the oatmeal I feel better, and I seem to be able to drop weight easier. (as long as it is in the form of porridge and not cookies :bear_tongue::bear_tongue:) |

Re: Oatmeal???
I think I have about (6 or 8) 5 gallon buckets of steam rolled oats in storage, been there for about 4 years. Bought at the feed store, cheap. Oats and rice are the two grains to start a bulk dry storage plan with.
I'd load up on sugar and spices too ... |
