Nematodes

These little buggers are making a feast of my garden... It had been wet earlier in the season.... I heard marigolds drive them away. Is that right?

Love to hear some all natural (or at least organic) bug control ideas. biggest problem w/ my garden right now.

Re: Nematodes

Most nematodes are beneficials so you do not want to drive them away. There are fungi that like to dine on nematodes so perhaps you might want to try and establish a healthy soil food web in your garden, which can be accomplished by spreading a good compost or compost tea.
You are aware that nematodes are microscopic and usually cause root problems rather than feast on leaves. If something is eating your garden plants it is something other than nematodes.

Re: Nematodes

Root knot nematodes can be a real problem wherever the ground doesn't freeze.
They can be controlled to some degree by increasing the organic content of your soil.
A few years ago I saw crushed crabshell chitin being sold as an organic control. The theory is that predatory nematodes would feed on the chitin and then kill the root knot nematodes.
Also ground up sesame pods were available commercially to control them.
Marigolds also have a reputation.

Best to create less sandy soil and use resistant veggie varieties when possible.
Many hybrid tomatoes have been bred to resist the little bastards.
I hate them myself.:thumpdown

I am in a perpetual battle against fireants. Used up most of a $18 container of orthene today, they just keep coming back. I am reduced to trying to keep them out of the roots of our trees and shrubs, in the yard I really only kill the mound if it gets too big. Eradication is pointless, next big rain they just float in and settle once again.

Re: Nematodes

actually im not personally sure if nematodes are what my problem is..

My Fatherinlaw diagnosed the problem. He's got a degree in agricultural education or something like that- at any rate hes an old farm boy.

My oakra plants sprout and some of them sort of "fall over" at mid stem - as if the bug burrowed up the stem or into it and ate out a very small section. - got 2 tomatoe plants as well. Turnips and radishes that did very well last year are sprouting and wilting as well. frusterating to say the least. it just bothers me b/c I want to be productive enough to suppliment w/ fresh veggies from a survival standpoint.

if your kid is (young) and they wiii try to eat or taste,,can, not keep from it..,,long run ,,good thing.
eating ,,may be not ..but....worry,ed (you all look in to or ask a(microbiologist)
