Coinstar

I dropped about $100 of loose change into a Coinstar sorting machine at the supermarket & happily, the only coin that was rejected was a 1964 silver quarter in perfect condition. What gives;was this a flook or does this machine sort out silver coins?

You're lucky you got it back.

I'm aware that at least a certain brand of coin machine used by a certain major popular bank separates clad from silver coins. For example, if you put in silver and clad half dollars, the silvers all go in one bag, the clad in another. They do their own separation right there at the point of entry.

And in return, you get your FRNs.

I used the one at the bank recently cause the spittoon I use for change was full.

The side of the tray where you dump the change is Magnetized ( i guess to sort none coin items)
well,
A dime stuck to the magnetic side!
but before I could grab it I knocked it in with more change :banghead:

any Ideas why it stuck there?

Coinstar machines DO spit out pre-65 coins. The supermarket by me has a coinstar machine and I've found two silver dimes this year just by looking when I walk by. People neglect to get a "lousy dime" and hurry to trade their change for FRNs. I'd like to look underneath one of those machines.

I've found canadian dimes in there too that are made from steel and stick to magnets.

I don't understand why people pay to have a machine count their coins and hope it's accurate.

I either spend coins or I pack them in jars and put them away. If the SHTF I'd rather be stuck holding a bunch of coins than a bunch of FRN's.

Always check Coinstar,

In addition to regular coins that were rejected, I found a 64 dime that way. Free silver rocks...:coolbeer:

I try to make a habit of taking a peek in the Coinstar's reject tray every time I go to the market. Have yet to find any silver, but did score a few steel '43 pennies. Will keep checking!

I'm gonna start checking the trays. Until now, I never thought these machines were good for anything.

How much does the Coinstar moneychanging machine give you for $100 of change?

I saw a sign on the coinstar machine that said it was free if you have the money put on a Giftcard

They charge 8.9% in my area (Hawaii), but it is free if you put it on a gift card like LOWES.

this free coinstar thing might be good for the people that want to dump all the zinc pennies without rollling them....a gift card at a walmart or lowes can always be used up i'm sure.

I am good friends with an owner of a company who processes coinstar machines. Coinstar machines are not tweaked to sort out/reject the silver.

Re: Coinstar

I always figured it kicked out the silver because of weight differences. I do some work at a place with one and have scored numerous dimes and several half dollars from the reject tray inside the machine. The manager knows I collect silver and opens it up so I can look. It's nice to have friends.
