Ancients?

Can anyone recommend a good beginner's book on Roman and/or Medieval coins? There's just something fascinating to me about coins a 1000 years, or older, that modern numis can't match.

I will look into it. The odd thing is that some of these coins that are soooo old and unique don't even command prices that are very high.

I know what you mean, owning such coins is like owning small pieces of history. I am also interested to see the recommendations since I'm also a beginner in this field.

Google "Vcoins" & http://esty.ancients.info/numis/ & http://www.forumancientcoins.com/

Look on there for their recommended beginner books. I can personally recommend the Paul Rynearson "Collecting Ancient Greek Coins" book by Whitman ($20), I just got it & beginner me thinks it is great. Good photos & good basic explainations of the 25 types he chooses, but he sure picked some pricey coins on a couple of the 25!

Roman coins are usually cheaper than greeks. Ancient coins are also not as "condition crazy" as modern coins. You can actually touch them!!
This weekend I paid $22.50 for a nickel+ sized Roman bronze coin of one of Constantine I's sons made in 337 AD that shows a Roman cavalryman spearing a barbarian!! :10_1_20:

LOTS of nice Roman coins are under $30 & some Greeks that are BEAUTIFUL are under $150. Ancients ROCK!!

I am so Old School I can barely work the computer, much less post pics. Go to Vcoins & you can see a LOT of similar late roman bronzes for under $50.

Thanks, Bill. I've been into numismatics a couple times, but didn't know what I was doing. This time, I am going to buy the book first, then the coin!
